If you’ve been researching the cost of living in Mexico, the Lake Chapala region is one of the most popular destinations for expats. People from the U.S. and Canada are moving here for the mild climate, vibrant international community, and far lower expenses compared to major North American cities.
But what does it really cost to live here? In this breakdown, I’ll share our real monthly budget as a couple with two pets, plus examples of what families typically spend. This way, you can see a clear picture of the cost of living in Mexico in 2025.
Our Monthly Budget as a Couple in Lake Chapala
Here’s what my wife Amanda and I currently spend each month living in the Lake Chapala area:
-
Rent: $600 USD for a gated community home with lake views
-
Utilities (electricity, gas, water, dual internet): $200 USD (most couples can keep it closer to $100)
-
Groceries: $350 USD for fresh produce, meats, and quality food
-
Home maintenance: $50 USD on average
-
Car and gas: $50 USD (we drive lightly)
-
Dining out: $100–$150 USD
-
Cell phones: $50 USD (U.S. and Mexican lines)
-
Housekeeper (twice a week): $200 USD
-
Personal care (massages, nails, spa): $300 USD
-
Private health insurance: $200 USD for both of us
Total cost of living in Mexico for our household: about $2,200 USD per month. This includes extras like massages, backup internet, and premium groceries. Many couples could easily live on $1,000–$1,500 USD monthly depending on location and lifestyle.
Rental Prices Around Lake Chapala
-
Jocotepec: $300–$800 USD for a one- or two-bedroom home
-
Chapala or San Juan Cosalá: $400–$900 USD depending on neighborhood
-
San Antonio Tlayacapan: $600–$900 USD for a two-bedroom
-
Ajijic: $900–$1,500+ USD due to high demand and walkability
Ajijic is the most premium option, with the largest expat community in Mexico. The cost of living in Mexico is noticeably higher here compared to smaller towns, but you get more amenities, restaurants, and English-speaking services.
Utilities, Groceries, and Extras
Utilities without backup internet generally run $80–$120 USD per month unless you use air conditioning heavily. Running AC 24/7 can push electricity costs to $200–$300 USD.
Groceries for two people average $300–$400 USD, depending on diet and imported goods. Dining out is affordable: a mid-range dinner for two in Ajijic costs about $35 USD.
Housekeepers typically cost $150–$250 USD per month depending on frequency. Cell phone plans average $15–$20 USD per person. Gasoline is around $4.90 USD per gallon, which keeps monthly car expenses low if you drive minimally.
Budget Scenarios for Couples
-
Budget lifestyle in Jocotepec or Chapala: $1,100–$1,500 per month
-
Comfortable lifestyle in San Antonio or mid-range Chapala: $1,600–$2,200 per month
-
Premium lifestyle in Ajijic: $2,000–$3,000+ per month
The cost of living in Mexico is significantly lower than in cities like Los Angeles, Miami, or New York, where couples often spend $4,000–$6,000 monthly just to get by.
Final Thoughts on the Cost of Living in Mexico
Overall, the cost of living in Mexico—especially in Lake Chapala—offers tremendous value. You can live comfortably for under $2,000 per month, or upgrade to a higher-end lifestyle with extras and still spend less than half of what you would in the U.S.
