Welcome back to another installment of our Expats in Mexico series! Many of you have been curious about life here—questions about the cost of living, quality of life, and especially healthcare in Mexico. Today, we’re tackling these topics as we walk to our new gym because, frankly, we haven’t been hitting the gym since landing here, and that’s simply not acceptable.
Firstly, I’m Amanda Abella, and this is Justin. Together, we boast over 25 years in digital marketing, helping clients worldwide with their sales, marketing, and systems. Currently based in Guadalajara, Mexico, we’re excited to share our insights with fellow entrepreneurs looking to run businesses from anywhere in the world.
Cost of Living and Food
One of the primary reasons people move to Mexico is the cost of living. In Guadalajara, groceries are surprisingly affordable. Shopping at Shedrowi, which we’ve dubbed the “Mexican Whole Foods,” we haven’t spent more than $40 a week for both of us. The quality of food here is refreshing—real food that doesn’t taste processed like much of what’s available in the US.
Healthcare in Mexico
Now, let’s dive into healthcare. Healthcare costs here are significantly lower compared to the US, with better quality and value. Justin pays around $1,100 to $1,200 annually for comprehensive major medical coverage, which includes nearly everything with a minimal deductible. Routine visits to specialists often cost as little as $30 to $40, making out-of-pocket payments manageable.
For minor ailments, visiting a pharmacy costs around $4 to see a doctor and obtain a prescription. This accessible healthcare system is a stark contrast to the more expensive and often complex US healthcare setup.
Exploring Our Gym
As we arrive at our gym—just a five-minute walk from our place—the convenience is evident. Spread over four floors with over 200 pieces of equipment, including a CrossFit section and MMA ring, this gym offers everything from cardio and weights to specialized training areas. It’s a fitness enthusiast’s dream, and the membership includes access to yoga and spinning classes, adding value to our health routine without breaking the bank.
Conclusion
Living in Mexico, particularly Guadalajara, offers a blend of affordability, quality healthcare, and vibrant lifestyle options like the gym we’ve just joined. Whether you’re considering a move abroad or interested in managing your business remotely, Mexico presents compelling opportunities.
